Finding a mechanical job can feel like navigating a maze of possibilities, but with the right steps, you can uncover a career path that truly fits your interests. This guide from Maintenance Technician Veronica Head breaks down the essentials to get you started in the field.

Step #1: Identify Your Interest
I think first identifying what area you might want to look into, familiarizing yourself with different career paths. Like, “Do I like mechanics? Do I like plumbing? Do I like construction? Do I like electrical stuff?”

Step #2: Scope Out Existing Programs
Look at local trade schools or community colleges, see what programs are there and what sounds interesting. They also have a career department person who can help you assess. Like, “I'm really interested in cars and engines. But also I’m kind of into woodworking, what do you think? What should I do?” They can point you in the right direction and you can also see which programs and trainings exist. If for example, you discover you’re really interested in the maritime or boat industry, then you can look into companies that do apprenticeship programs in this industry. That's a great way to get paid to learn and get the necessary certifications.

Step #3: Get Trained
Find some way to get trade [experience], whether that is an apprenticeship, on the job training, or trade school. Depending on your path, you might have to go to trade school or [do] a certification program prior to being able to start a job.

Step #4: Start Working and Keep Learning
[Now] you have a job, good job! Keep working up in your career, keep furthering your training. I’d recommend your local trade school or community college’s [continuing] trainings. There’s also some Reddit communities, [like] r/bluecollarwomen and r/skilledtrades.

It really is a career field that depends on where you are living – for trades, look local as much as you can. Thank you Veronica for sharing these tips with us on how to find a mechanical job that best suits your interests!
